Welcome to North Beach Community Alliance

The North Beach Community Alliance was founded in 2021 when several residents decided to oppose a Bed & Breakfast that would have dramatically changed the small beach vibe of the community.

As we learned more about land use in St. Johns County, it became apparent that without checks and balances and citizen involvement, developers can stretch the code beyond the original intent.

From there, we were successful, with overwhelming support from the residents, in opposing and stopping the development of a massive hotel in the Vilano Town Center through our research, education and advocacy.

Today, we continue to work to preserve and maintain the small beach vibe that enticed many residents to call Vilano and North Beach home.

Save Anastasia State Park

August 24, 2024|Anastasia Mouse, Anastasia State Park, Beaches, Development, Parks & Recreation, Preservation, Resiliency, St Johns County

By now, you have seen the proposal to develop a portion of Anastasia State Park with a 350-room “lodge,” pickleball and disc golf.

[Scroll for instructions on how to oppose this development.]

This development is part of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Great Outdoors Initiative across the State. It is a state plan, not a plan from any local government. One of 9 sites is Anastasia State Park, a park boasting 1,600 acres of unspoiled beaches, tidal marshes, maritime hammocks and ancient sand dunes.

Oh, and the Anastasia State Park is the home of the Anastasia Island Beach Mouse, a federally endangered mouse which can only be found on Anastasia Island. The reason that it is listed as endangered is “due to the loss of the habitat that it needs to survive”….Anastasia Island.

For comparative purposes, the Embassy Suites Hotel just north on A1A has about 200 rooms and looks like a monster. Imagine replacing the mouse’s habitat with this?

The announcement of this initiative was a surprise to St Johns County, the City of St Augustine and the City of St Augustine Beach.

The public meetings which were originally scheduled next week have been postponed due to the strong opposition that residents have already shown. Stay tuned to the St Augustine Record for reschedule dates – the link takes you to a free sign up, if you are not already a member.

What to do

If you do not want to see this development in Anastasia State Park, you need to act and act now! The link below is to the DEP survey asking for public input.

Please share your thoughts about this project sooner rather than later.
