Vilano and North Beach reside on the southern end of a barrier island, with the Atlantic Ocean, Intracoastal Waterway and St. Augustine Inlet bordering the community - less than 3,000 feet from the ocean to the Waterway. The Vilano Bridge provides transport across the Intracoastal to downtown St. Augustine.
This unique situation - one bridge off the island, and a 17 mile trip north if that bridge is unavailable - makes traffic and mobility an important issue for Vilano and North Beach.

In April 2022, our community experienced a tragic accident when a pedestrian was killed while crossing A1A at the North Beach Campground. Those of us who live here are acutely aware of how dangerous A1A has become – to pedestrians, bikes and even automobiles. NBCA is currently exploring avenues for working with the County and State to take some action to improve the safety on A1A and will post updates as they are available.

Did you know that a Multi-Use Trail (bikes/pedestrian) is planned to be built through St. Johns County? The study was completed in 2019, and parts of the trail from San Marco Avenue to the east end of the Vilano Bridge have been funded for planning, design and engineering in the next couple years.
NBCA is working with trail advocates to learn more about how we might be able to accelerate the work along A1A.
Neighborhoods who want to address traffic and safety issues can use the process described in the County's Traffic Calming Program.
